Gutter Cleaning in Lancashire

Gutter cleaning is an essential part of a home maintenance programme. Preparing your home for winter and the extremes of weather should be high on your to - do list!

Gutter systems and downspouts run around your home and other out buildings just under your roofing. They have the very important job of carrying off the rain water and the minor debris that drains off your roof when it rains. This protects your walls from constant water exposure and weathering.

What will happen if I don’t get my gutters regularly cleaned out?

If your gutters are not regularly inspected and cleaned they can become blocked by leaves, moss and soil. Yes, you read that right we said soil!

Every rain drop is formed by water condensing on a speck of dust. Rainwater washes down the dust that is in the air into your gutters. It's the same reason why you have to get your windows or car washed! Over time, this can become a problem as we don’t get our gutters cleaned on a weekly basis like we do when we clean our cars!

Water Damage

When your gutters become blocked the water flow and drainage slows down or is stopped completely. This causes more problems as the soil and other debris now has nowhere to go! It just sits there and builds up. Then it rains and the water has nowhere to go, so it overflows from your gutters dripping all down your walls!

Walls exposed to water over a long time can become damp and discoloured. Then, during the depths of winter, the water on your walls will freeze. Frost can cause real damage and will result in crumbling walls and mortar!

Sagging Gutters

Due to the build-up of soil in your gutters they can become very heavy. Eventually, your gutters will start to sag. This can result in broken joint seals and the gutter falling off!

Can I Clean my gutters myself?

If you are confident, physically strong with a good head for heights then gutter cleaning is something you could possibly do yourself.
However, be careful! If you have an accident it could be disastrous to life and property!

Please note the following is for information only, if you choose to clean your own gutters you do so entirely at your own risk!
We do not recommend that you clean your own gutters. We recommend you use a professional gutter cleaning service. See below for advice on how to choose one.
To clean the gutters you will need the following equipment:

  • A ladder or some other secure way to access your gutters.
  • Gloves – gardening gloves would be ideal.
  • A large strong bucket and something to attach it to the ladders as you work.

Always ensure your ladder is properly erected, secure and footed by someone on the ground. Make sure no one is underneath your ladder as you work.
While you can use a trowel to scoop out the leaves, soil and other debris from your gutters we recommend using your hand. Sometimes it can be hard to fit tools in under the overhang of your roof tiles and there is the risk that you may drop your tools causing damage below.

How to choose a professional gutter cleaning service?

It is very important to inspect and clean out your gutters at least once a year. Failure to do so could result in serious damage to your property.
While it is possible to clean your gutters yourself, we recommend the use of a professional gutter cleaning service. But how do you find a professional, and not some fly by night cowboy who may not do a thorough job?

Here are our tips to help you choose a good gutter cleaning service:

  • Are they a proper business? Do they have a registered office and real address? Is this on their literature or website?
  • Do they have insurance? – Tradesman’s public liability insurance is a must. This should cover them for damage to you, others or your property.
  • Are the insured to work at height? A lot of insurance policies have restrictions on this.
  • Do they have a landline telephone number that is quoted on business stationary or their website?
  • Are they VAT registered? This will make them 20% more expensive however, the V in VAT stands for value which will be in the experience they have gained over the years. - You want someone who knows what they are doing.
  • Have you checked their online reputation? Read online reviews about the company and their service. Obviously you are looking for positive reviews. But how do they deal with negative reviews? This should be done courteously and they should want to resolve the issue for the customer.
  • Can you be invoiced for the work done? Cash in hand jobs give you little or no protection.
  • Who made contact first? You should make first contact. Avoid cold calls and be very wary of people who knock on your door offering their services!

While all of the above are common sense checks to make, it can take a lot of time. That is why we can confirm that we meet the above requirements and will be more than happy to share the information with you should you want us to. Read below to see what we offer.
